GCF Interview, Colin Hamling

Director & GCF SG chair

In January 2010 the Global Certification Forum announced that it is on course to deliver a complete LTE device certification scheme before the end of 2010.

The Forum is working closely with 3GPP RAN5 to ensure that there is the highest possible amount of synchronization between standards and certification, with the GCF selecting and prioritizing the hundreds of LTE conformance tests that are needed to ensure the international interoperability of LTE equipment across all regions.

In this video - Colin Hamling tells us about the GCFs' work and their cooperation with RAN Working Group 5.

    Global mobile Suppliers Association Interview

Alan Hadden, GSA President, February 2010

Alan Hadden is President of the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), he has 21 years' experience in senior positions in the manufacturing, regulatory, operator and consultative sectors of the mobile communications industry.

The GSA is a Partner in 3GPP, offering a broad industry perspective for the benefit of the Project.

In this video Alan gives us his insiders' view of where the industry is today and where it will be in the coming months and years.

  • Service & Systems Aspects (with short musical intro)

Stephen Hayes, Ericsson Inc., 3GPP SA Chairman

This interview introduces the coordination role of 3GPP Technical Specification Group SA is coordinating the various Releases so that the system develops smoothly.

Stephen Hayes gives his views on the way that operators are moving towards a new architecture for high volume services and the continuing need for existing lower bandwidth requirements. New applications, services, new devices are all on the way – so the 3GPP architecture work is now taking care that all networks can work together.

Also, Stephen describes the role of IMS as a key element of next generation mobile networks…IMS is set to enable multi-media services in the near future, across the fixed and mobile domains.

  • LTE Radio Aspects

Takehiro Nakamura, NTT DoCoMo, 3GPP RAN Chairman

LTE specifications are very stable. TSG RAN was working in September 2009 (The Seville meeting) to complete Release 9. Takehiro Nakemura explains the enhancements to Release 8 and the consideration of new features in subsequent Releases.

There are more improvements to come in LTE-Advanced (3GPP Release 10), due for specification work up to the end of 2010.

  • GSM EDGE

Andrew Howell, RIM, 3GPP GERAN Chairman

GERAN has been continuing to evolve GSM EDGE technology towards services that approach UMTS and LTE levels. Andrew Howell discusses how evolved EDGE allows operators to roll out advanced services on 2G networks in many countries that are yet to issue 3G licences.

  • Core Network & Terminals

Hannu Hietalahti, Nokia Corp., 3GPP CT Chairman

"With the step to a new All-IP network we have the potential for many new services and capabilities". Hannu Hietalahti explains why LTE radio is a big step in the evolution of the core network. He looks forward to the introduction femtocells mobility parts and the capability to handle emergency calls over IMS – completing the full set of services in the IMS portfolio.

This interview is preceeded by a short introductory - musical - film about the TSG meeting in Seville.
